Northshore Infrastructure Summit Lays Groundwork for Regional Growth

ST. TAMMANY, La. — The Northshore Business Council’s Infrastructure Summit, held on November 7, 2024, brought together regional leaders to chart a course for improving transportation systems across Tangipahoa, Washington, and St. Tammany Parishes.

Discussions centered on addressing critical road and bridge challenges, preparing for future growth, and leveraging funding opportunities for sustainable development.

In Tangipahoa Parish, a renewed 1% sales tax will channel 75% of its revenue toward essential infrastructure projects. Plans include elevating roads, enhancing drainage, and investing $700 million in developments for the southeast quadrant. Upcoming projects like the Fire Tower Road interchange and Hwy 445 improvements aim to accommodate increasing demands, while repairs or replacements are scheduled for 25 bridges.

Economic activity in Washington Parish stands to benefit from the timely completion of the Hwy 3241 extension. This project, slated for 2026, is vital for industries such as the International Paper Mill, which relies heavily on trucking. Limited rail infrastructure poses additional challenges, prompting calls to explore rail privatization to improve freight systems. Local leaders are working collaboratively with NBC to secure legislative support for these advancements.

St. Tammany Parish’s ambitious Multi-Modal Transportation Plan focuses on integrating roadway expansions, bike lanes, and intermodal hubs into a long-term vision. Backed by a $105 million pipeline of projects and a $1 billion 30-year plan, St. Tammany seeks to balance safety, connectivity, and sustainability while remaining responsive to residents’ needs through periodic reviews.

Jeff Roussel of the Regional Planning Commission highlighted federal funding opportunities under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program offers municipalities funding for safety-focused projects through an 80/20 federal match. Local initiatives targeting pedestrian and cyclist safety, along with intersection improvements, align with the RPC’s “Path to Zero” vision to eliminate traffic fatalities.

The summit underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic investment in creating a more connected and resilient Northshore. These efforts reflect a unified commitment to addressing today’s challenges while ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
